Q&A: Is There a Way to Cure Bad Breath That Is Really Smelly?

There are many factors that can contribute to bad breath. If it has been occurring for awhile you may want to check with your dentist. Bad breath might be a warning sign of other health issues. It is a good idea to visit your dentist at least every once every six months for cleanings and checkups to keep your mouth free of plaque buildup and other problems that can lead to bad breath.

Although there is no immediate way to cure bad breath there are things that you can do to reduce it:

  1. Common offenders of bad breath include alcohol, coffee (both caffeinated and decaffeinated), dense proteins (such as those found in dairy and meat products), garlic and onions, and sugars. These are all common causes of bad breath.
  2. Try to breathe through your nose. By breathing through your mouth it can lead to having a dry mouth, which creates a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria.
  3. Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day to remove food particles and plaque. Floss between your teeth once a day, preferably in the evening after you eat.
  4. Try using a fluoride mouth rinse with antiseptic ingredients and a pleasant mint flavor. This helps to protect your teeth, and the flavor masks odor problems. Try to use a mouth rinse that is low in alcohol as this can also promote the growth of bacteria and can actually make the problem worse!
  5. Consider internal breath fresheners such as over-the-counter pills you take before or after a meal to aid the prevention of malodorous breath. Parsley after a meal is the natural alternative that you can chew on.

If symptoms persist or if you have specific medical conditions or concerns,  it is recommended that you contact a physician. This information is not designed as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
